The Panda Pencil Company (see the "about us" page), facing increasing competition from Asian polymer leads beginning in the 1980s, tried to import and resell .7mm polymer leads from Japan while the company assessed the cost of upgrading to polymer-based lead manufacturing equipment.
With cheap Asian leads flooding the American market, Panda couldn't turn a profit on the enterprise and the equipment costs were prohibitive. When Panda closed, the company had a significant stock of these unsold, imported Japanese leads.
